E- Mail to Plan B

Hi Plan B!

I am writing to you for a number of reasons.

I'm 16, My name is Mariam, and I am studying at the Greenford High School Sixth Form - which I don't think you would have heard of, it's in West London!!! As a media studies students I have been incredibly happy to be studying your movie at the moment- Ill Manors, this has been an exceptional film to watch, and even going on to studying it further only gets more interesting, and not only me but our entire class has been moved by it! I hope you're proud of yourself, because now, many of us see you as an inspiration.

Firstly, Congratulations on such a success with Ill Manors, this movie sure is an eye opener for many who judge without thinking, and I'm glad a person like yourself has made it big and got your point across successfully, even at the Ted x talk that we are also studying! Your movie will be the case study for our exam, but we as year 12 Media students, wouldn't want to just read websites and articles to know more about you.. That's not real enough, we'd love to be inspired live!

We as young people would be really pleased if you would take out less than a few hours of your time whenever - and visit our school/sixth form - Greenford High School. this will give us some real knowledge on your struggles, your view on society and the politics, basically your values- everything you have learnt from life, summarized to us, so we can reflect on the risks you've taken, in order to better and build ourselves further - although our free-school meals students, like myself, do very well academically (108th in the country) - you giving a live guide and talk about your movie and the morals behind it, can reach out to so many and it sure will make a difference, to the school & the media department, as you will be able to answer any questions we may have. You being here will can also be a massive reflection on the grades we achieve, as our exam will basically be based on YOU, yes, our A-Levels. We are all products of our environment, so maybe you could be what makes the environment better. Only asking for 45 minutes of your time, we've definitely spent hours studying you and your movie, so I hope you can make it work as you are our local.

Thanks,

Mariam x

MEST 2 PROGRESS REPORT : Thursday 30th January

WWW :

- I was able to film the day that I wanted to film.

Ill Manors: TEDx Lecture

  1. What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain.
  2. Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?
  3. What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics? Read this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.

Plan B's political views are against conservative, as he thinks that there is not being enough to support the youth leading to them being seen as anti social. He believes that being poor leads to youth being the way they are and they shouldn't been stripped as ''CHAVs'' & ''scum's'' by the media.

The target audience for Plan B's Ted x lecture is youth as they will be able to relate to this talk the most, as well as those from the demographic group E, D, C2, C1 and B. this is because these are the kind of people who are most likely to want to see the none political view to issues such as the riot. In addition those who belong to the phychographic group of reformers as they will want to know more about other topics.

During the TED x talk Plan B stated that the Media are exaggerating stereotypes in order to use them against the youth and constantly make them feel left out of the society. Plan B claims that the media and politics is to blame for the  stereotypes that everyone has of the youths.

ILL MANORS: REVIEW

1.     What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?

The main characters are usually shown, as well as shots of any interesting events, these events aren't shown enough for the audience to identify exactly what is happening.

2.     How are trailers distributed?
Trailers can be shown as an advert in either TV, YouTube, or in cinemas. Furthermore trailers are often on the official website of the movie – as this website is there to provide audience with more information on the film. Trailers are also distributed as YouTube video’s on the movie’s official YouTube page, or any other associates’ YouTube channel e.g. Revolver Entertainment, Fox.

3.     How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
The trailer a shows the main characters of the movie, and allows the audience to identify with them, however not too much information on them is revealed in order to not give away the story of the movie, because if the story is hidden

4.     Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the      narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used?

5.     How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing

Characters
The characters in ill manors are mainly youths, so either young adults, or teenagers/pre-teens. All of the characters are shown to be from a lower class background, which belong to the socio group of C2-E. The characters are represented to be seen as some whose uses and gratifications is mainly escapism, as they need a way out, and they all have different escapes, e.g. selling drugs to make money for Chris. These characters are youth, and the genre is definitely represented through them as they are from an urban area, with plenty of drama in their life.

Setting
The settings that are used in Ill manors shows that there is a contrasting side to the East London. East London is deliberately shown in this movie in order to contract the legacy of the Olympics, in order to show no matter what, the reality will still be the reality, and regardless of how much an area can develop it doesn't necessarily mean that the youth and people will also change. The area was deprived and urban, in the centre of the attractive Olympic stadium meaning that it fit perfectly with the genre being 'urban drama', as many of the locations were dramatic and really what they are shown in the movie! In addition, the genre could be crime too, and these locations that were dangerous can denote and link in with crime, danger and streets.

Lighting
There was lighting used in the trailer which was black and white in order to show it's a flashback. There is also dim and dark lighting used in order to show what a that Kirby, the drug dealer is closest to the 'villain' role, as he is shown in this lighting, making the story seen mysterious, and crime like. The dark lighting creates suspense and mysterious, linking to the crime drama genre. When the lighting is bright, it shows the happy and more positive moments, representing characters moods.

Colours
The narrative of the movie isn't very bright and cheerful, it is rather depressing and down bringing therefore the trailer uses colours like grey, black ect in order to show that the movie will be depressive and not necessarily something that entertains in a exciting manner.

Music/Dialogue
Plan B uses his rap, alongside Faith SFX to beat-box in order to create the rap which was used in the trailer in order to narrate the story, however the narration wasn't shown fully, so the story isn't given away. In addition, a lot of swearing was used in the dialogue in order to represent the type of genre the movie was - an urban drama, a lot of the language used in the trailer was also explicit, therefore meant that it can be seen aggressive and therefore relate to the genre of crime too. The music was non diegetic and fast paced, this also created tension, and built suspense, fitting in with the genre of both crime and urban drama.

Cinematography/Editing
The cinematography used was varied. A range of angles and movement was used in the trailer. Firstly close ups of characters were shown, in order for the audience to relate to them as they are able to see their facial expression, which was mainly serious. Low angles have been used on certain characters so they are shown to be more superior. In addition long/medium shots are used to show the characters in full  i.e. the audience are then able to see their dressing and body language, allowing them to relate the angles to the genre, of crime and urban drama.

iLL MANORS : THE MAKiNG !

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
Plan B's intention of directing this movie was for people to see things from the perspective of others, i.e the youth. he stated that the youth were seen too crucial and 'evil', however he wants the movie to show that there is more to bad people, there may be a story, their upbringing ect - this was what was shown in the movie. Plan B intended to challenge the stereotypes of all those who had been rioting, and present an counter-argument for those who think that bad people are just 'bad' full stop. His idea was to present each character, and gain audience sympathy from them, this is because the audience know that this is what is happening in the real world, and their are characters like that who do exist in the world we live in.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
The production was Plan B's first movie production. We learn that it was difficult for the director as he wasn't educated in the field to know enough 'technical terms', however, he had a clear vision and this allowed him to stay uncompromising, passionate and determined to make an 'amazing film'.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?
The audience is definitely 'the youth'! This is because the movie has shown the youths mainly and the problems that they can face in their lives. The film also appealing to those of he middle age, and those who didn't understand these issues that youth's went through

4) Does the film successfully do what director  Plan B set out to achieve? (Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.)
In my opinion the film certainly does what the director had intended as it leaves the audience feeling incredibly emotional, and some like it, and some don't like it because it was ''too'' emotional and gritty.

MEST 2 - Progress Report - 16th January 2014

Work completed since 6th January ?
-SCRIPT
-STORYBOARD
-HALF OF SHOT LIST
-Mise En Scene (Lighting and props)

Incomplete pre-production task?
All the work is completed, I just need to go over and see if I can add or improve anything, especially the script.

Next Step / Action Plan ?
I am prepared to start recording, however I will not be able to start shooting until after Wednesday 22nd January, 6 days from today this gives me enough time to be able to have a steady pre-production, book camera and equipment as well as give notice to actors. In addition I intend to film the following weekend from  my first filming, this will be 25/26th January. During the filming all the actors will be in costume and in location and I will have the required equipment, therefore I am deciding to have the photo shoot on location (Brunel University) before I begin to film.  The photo shoot will take place on the 22nd Jan, the first day with the camera, so I have enough time to work with the print as well as the production.

Date filming will be completed?
The filming should all be completed and ready to edit by Monday 27th January. This will give me three weeks to do the print as well as the production
Date editing will be completed?
I will start editing at home on 24th January, I will then continue this with all my shots on a Monday(27th Jan) in school, I will work everyday - especially in the holidays, either at home or in school, on the production or the print in order to get all the editing for everything done by the 20th February the latest.

Christmas End of term: Test Learner Response (MEST 1)

Grade: E
MARK : 19
WWW: good discussion of media forms
EBI: improve timing - not enough coverage of question four.

Question 4: MEDIA AUDIENCES - REDO! (MARK : 4/12)

'' Does the programme 'inform, educate and entertain' its audience? ''
The extract is made for an audience that fit into the phychographic group of either main streamers, explorers or reformers, this is because these are the groups that would enjoy BBC'S programming.BBC having recording the 'behind the scenes' footage, also allows consumer's to be able to be informed and educated, as they are aware of how exactly the show is filmed, as well as the struggles, therefore the clip fits in with the broad appeal of BBC, as it ''informs, educates and entertains'' a wide range. The uses and gratifications that this show fits into are both surveillance and diversion, this is because the people that watch this show will watch it for surveillance, as they are learning about the Antarctic and diversion as they are able to be entertained by this documentary too.   In addition the voice-over, which was from David Attaborough adds authority as he is well known and therefore audience will be educated. Finally the narrative used throughout the programme which was to see if the camera crew succeed and get out alive created entertainment, enigma codes.

Ill Manors : Film Review

Write a review of the film 'Ill Manors', of at least 750 words, using the guide to help.

Director
The movie ill manors is a small budget British movie, and has been directed by well-known singer/rapper, song writer and actor Ben Drew, who is famous as 'Plan B' - He who belongs from forest gate in East London.

Main Stars
The movie consists of 8 main characters: Aaron, Chris, Ed, Katya, Kirby, Michelle, Marcel, Jake. We see their lives and how troubled they are in their own different ways. The movies uses much flashback’s to show how much a child's upbringing can affect their future and their decisions. .

Plot
Ill manors are mainly shot in the areas of East London, near to the Olympic stadium. The location has been vital because although South East London has been ‘changed’ due to the Olympic being a legacy to the original deprived areas of Newham and Forest Gate. Ill manors starts off with Ed getting caught selling drugs with the main character (his sidekick) Aaron. This leads to many events occurring. Aaron works for Ed who is a ‘gangster’, who really is just a drug dealer, he has recently been bailed from prison and discovers Aaron has lost his phone; Ed needs his phone as his regular drug using customers would ring that phone. Ed takes Aaron around to find the phone were a drug abusing lady is sold to local shop keepers and chicken shop employees, in order to raise enough money to satisfy Ed. Ed also ends up losing his gun, which belongs to an original gangster Chris, in order to find the gun – which was on the top floor of a burning pub, Ed had to go and face his fears and rescue the gun, as well as a baby. He had thrown the gun and the baby to Aaron and jumped out of the window, this caused his death. This was followed by Jake asking for drugs from a local ‘badman’ - Marcell, this resulted in him being asked to beat up a local good boy, so he can be entered with the cool kids. However Jakes young mind resulted in him being forced by Marcell into killing Kirby, who was a drug dealer, who Marcell and Chris hated. Jake went to kill Kirby and ended up killing Chris’s sister the original badman who Marcell was ‘shook’ of. Chris then killed both Marcell and Jake for accidentally killing his sister.

Characters
There are many characters involved in the movie overall, this included Aaron (main character)’s social worker, the pub owner etc. However all characters are shown to be tangled in their own problems, leading to many people dying within the film such as Ed. Most of the characters have been raised with a bad upbringing, where either they have lived on their own, or in care after being abandoned by their parents. ‘we are all products of our environment’, this quote from the beginning of the movie  justifies why Jake - who is a young boy, turns to being a ‘bad man’. Jake was an innocent pre-teen, who looked up to Marcell. Marcel turned Jake bad, he was a bad influence and he was a coward. Chris was the most intimidating character in the movie.

Genre
The movie is an urban drama. My first expression based on the poster of ill manors, was that it would be similar to kidult hood and the sequel film adulthood. The mood of the movie was mainly depressive, but eye-opening because we get an insight of what life is really like in the suburban regions of London. However, towards the end I felt that certain events happening can be a step up for certain people, for example the character of Rizwan Ahmed – Aaron, he was a sidekick for Ed, who got him in more trouble, so after his death he went his own way in order to fix up, leaving the audience satisfied In some ways, as we are shown that people are changing, and some won’t always stay ‘’in the hood’’.

Sound
Music was used in order to narrate the 8 stories taking place throughout the film. Plan B, the director was the creator of the music. In my opinion using rap as a narrative strategy was a good idea as it allowed to target the audience further, because in general the audience is a younger generation and they will be able to relate to rap music. The music being used as a narration also allowed giving details on the character, so the audience can know them better and therefore sympathize with them. In addition the music allowed the story to unfold better as it made it easier for the audience to understand the story.

Audience

The audience of the film ‘Ill manors’ was mainly the youth, aging from 13-25. To be specific the target audience are mainly males. This is because the film includes a lot of swearing, a lot of aggressive behavior and sexual themes as well as dis-respectful attitudes towards women. Of course, this won’t be favored by any gender, however, males may be more ‘light-hearted’ about the themes of the story, whereas for females it would be more emotional as they will be able to empathize more to their own gender. This may make them feel depressed, leading to them not liking the movie – therefore they aren't the main target audience. However, some females will find the story interesting.

PROPS

Aisha's Diary

This will be used as Aisha's / Adam's books

COSTUME & MAKE UP

Aisha will be shown to wear clothing which is casual - all the time - she will be in trainers and dull colors, she'll look like a stereotypical 'geek'.

She will mostly carry her books or her diary.
Aisha will wear very less make up - if any, and will wear glasses.

Adam will always be dressed trendy, with sleeked hair wearing bright colors as he will need to look vibrant and contradictory to Aisha.

Adam's friends will also be dressed stylish and his female friend is pretty and has make up on.

LIGHTING

Most of the shots are interior, meaning that there will be light from the source of light available in the room, there is an extra lamp that can be used if any lighting problems do occur. The university halls and rooms are well lit as the lighting is already quite bright due to a bright bulb that needs to cover a small room - where I'll
 be shooting.
